  1. Hi guys,
I had a great first day at Causey Middle. Everyone keeps telling me how bad middle school is, which makes me weary, but I think I like this age group. We'll see if I've changed my mind by March. My cooperating teacher is great! She made me feel very comfortable and told me that I can teach as much as I want while I'm there.

  2. Hey there,
I hope that those of you who are "moving" into the classrooms are having a great experience! I think that the classroom experience is the best experience. Personally, I feel that the texts can only lead you so far in education. I really valued the surreal moment of walking into my classroom and teaching "my" students. One teacher told me that your first year teaching seems like you're "flying by the seat of you pants" most of the time. You are learning so much very quickly, but you find that it does get easier over time. Just ask questions when you are unsure of something. If you have any questions for me, send me an email or give me a call.

  3. Hi All,
So I finally figured out how to do this. It works!!! I thought class went well tonight. I remember and (still have) some first hand experiences in being new in a school. My biggest suggestion to those of you who are observing is to find a good, experienced teacher, but who's still relatively new to give you guidance. Some things you will have to learn on your own, but newer teachers have just recently been through some of the things that you will go through and be able to tell you steps to follow for a certain process or whom you need to ask for something, etc. It can really be a lifesaver if you have someone like that. You're supposed to have a mentor when you get into a school, but that doesn't always work out well.

I think the easiest thing is trial and error. Find out what works for you in both behavioral management issues as well as teaching strategies. You might be surprised what will work, even with high school students.

  4. That is so true. In fact, it's true for both classroom management and general activities. On Saturday I saw ten 9th grade students go crazy over getting to make puppets for poetry theatre.
